COURSE DESCRIPTION
Dialectical Behavior Therapy Next Steps, formerly DBT – Accepting the Challenges of Employment and Self-Sufficiency (DBT-ACES) was developed as an adjunctive treatment to Standard DBT to increase living wage employment and self-sufficiency. DBT Next Steps builds off of Standard DBT with an expanded skills curriculum geared towards finding, maintaining, and thriving in employment settings. DBT Next Steps features unique recovery goals to target life-worth-living goals with more clarity and precision, and utilizes contingency management and exposure-based strategies to initiate and maintain new behaviors for clients who have life worth living goals related to employment. This two-day training will provide an overview of the modifications to Standard DBT used to increase financial independence and self-sufficiency, including the contingencies of Work as Therapy, Career Development and Normative Productivity, as well as teaching participants the DBT Next Steps skills training curriculum.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
- Describe the modifications to Standard DBT used to increase financial independence and self-sufficiency within DBT Next Steps
- Understand the use of DBT Next Steps Recovery Goals to approach life-worth-living goals with more precision and clarity
- Explain the DBT Next Steps contingencies of Work as Therapy, career Development and Normative Productivity to increase employment and self-sufficiency
- Describe key skills in the DBT Next Steps skills training curriculum
Instructor | Adam Carmel, PhD is Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington. He previously served on the faculty of Harvard Medical School at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. In his role as Director of a DBT outpatient clinic and partial hospitalization program at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center, he developed a psychotherapy seminar for psychiatry residents, psychology interns, and social work trainees.
In 2016 Dr. Carmel received the Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching and Mentorship from the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Department of Psychiatry. In 2023 he received the Outstanding Mentoring and Teaching Faculty Award from the University of Washington’s Psychology Internship Program.
Instructor | Katherine Comtois (she/her), PhD, MHP is Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Washington. She received her Ph.D. in clinical/community psychology from the University of Maryland in 1992. She received her MPH in Health Services at the University of Washington in 2009. Dr. Comtois has over 25 years of experience in Dialectical Behavior Therapy training and implementation in large health systems. She has trained across the United States as well as in Canada, England, Norway, and Australia. Having directed a DBT program in public mental health for over 20 years, Dr. Comtois is particularly knowledgeable about the systemic issues of DBT implementation and the structural changes needed for sustainable implementation.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This is not an introductory training. It is intended for individuals who are already using comprehensive DBT in their practice and/or who directly supervise other clinicians who provide DBT.
REQUIREMENTS AND PREREQUISITES
It is required that attendees have received no less than 20 hours of DBT training.

CONTINUING EDUCATION HOURS
Participants who complete the training will earn 12 CE hours.
Portland DBT Institute has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6326.
Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Portland DBT Institute is solely is responsible for all aspects of the program.

CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS
A $60.00 handling fee will be deducted upon cancellation. Refund requests by fax or email must be received two weeks before the start date. In addition, the fees are non-transferrable.
PDBTI reserves the right to cancel any program due to under-enrollment, or any course due to work stoppages, instructor illness or inclement weather. If a course is cancelled, PDBTI is responsible for refunding only the course fee.
