COURSE DESCRIPTION:

DBT, like the clients for whom it was designed, is a complex and nuanced treatment. Clinicians can feel overwhelmed by the intensity of clients distress or the high risk nature of their behaviors, especially at the outset of treatment. However, getting clients from behavioral dyscontrol to quiet desperation (i.e., from Stage 1 to Stage 2) does not necessarily mean the treatment gets more straight forward. In fact, clinicians often report feeling unmoored, not knowing how to effectively structure sessions when life threatening behavior is under control and weekly chains are not as obviously indicated.

This advanced workshop is designed to support clinicians in better understanding and implementing DBT with clients once unrelenting crisis has passed –increasing understanding their quality-of-life threatening behaviors and how to skillfully address those in individual therapy. We will practice creating thorough and dynamic case conceptualizations as a means to figure out causes of clients’ behavior rather than judging or blaming. We will also explore how to use those case conceptualizations to create robust, behaviorally specific treatment plans based on your client’s goals. Finally, using our treatment plan as a road map, we will discuss concrete, specific strategies to help clients make progress towards their goals by strengthening and generalizing the skills they are learning in group. The utility and power of chain analysis will be modeled throughout – as a way to strengthen the relationship through validation and increased understanding, create behavioral experiments, and test hypotheses all in the service of goal-directed change.

LEARNINING OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Develop a detailed, dynamic case conceptualization.

  4. Effectively structure individual sessions.
